This specialist e-learning course is suitable for those who hold, or are preparing to take on, Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead responsibilities within Primary education.

Primary schools occupy a unique position within safeguarding. DSLs and their teams often develop long-standing relationships with children and families, placing them in a vital position to recognise changes, identify emerging concerns and provide appropriate support.

From attendance and family circumstances to emotional wellbeing, online safety, peer relationships and emerging safeguarding concerns, the role requires knowledge, professional curiosity and the confidence to make informed safeguarding decisions.

Developed in partnership with education and safeguarding specialist Cassie Blackwood of CB Early Years & Education, this course combines comprehensive DSL training with specialist content designed specifically for the realities of safeguarding within Primary education.

This course costs £65 per person.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

• Understand and describe the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead within a Primary school;
• Understand the statutory safeguarding framework relevant to education and how this translates into everyday safeguarding practice;
• Recognise indicators of abuse, neglect and other forms of harm and understand how concerns may present in Primary-aged children;
• Understand the importance of professional curiosity and identifying patterns, changes and emerging safeguarding concerns;
• Promote and embed a strong safeguarding culture throughout the school;
• Ensure staff understand their safeguarding responsibilities and feel confident recognising, recording and reporting concerns;
• Understand effective safeguarding record keeping, confidentiality, data protection and appropriate information sharing;
• Understand the importance of working effectively with children, parents, carers and external agencies;
• Understand the importance of multi-agency working and know when information should be shared or professional challenge may be required;
• Apply safeguarding knowledge and professional judgement confidently within the context of a Primary school.
